Re: rule 12v auto bilge pump constantly running electronic switches which sense the presence of water without a float are likely to trigger false pumping if the water is dirty. wet dirt or slime sticking to the sensor allows a signal current to flow, and switch it on, or more likely to keep the pump running after the water has gone.. If enough water accumulates in the bilge, it will raise the "float" switch at the pump and turn on the bilge pump. this provided of course, that the switch at the helm station is set to "automatic". if your bilge pump(s) are running continuously (and none of your on/off switches or mistakenly in the "on" position) then it could be a sign of. The pump would be running constantly at a low level but when you lifted the float, it would kick in to a higher level. on my mayfair marine bilge setup, the pump cartridge is separate from the float switch. when i disconnected the float switch, the pump stopped running and the light behind the dashboard toggle switch went off..
Re: bilge pump running constantly could it be the float switch? thanks for all the advice. turns out the float switch was shorting out and causing the fuse to pop. put in a new float and everything works great. jcintheville. So i normally trailer my boat but this week i have a slip for a vacation i am on. been sitting on the dock an noticed that every 25 to 30 minutes the boat will spit some water out of the bilge pump while tied up at the dock and sitting on it.. Woke up to find the bilge pump running non stop. this occurred after all the house batteries had died which had since been recharged and reinstalled..
